Services for Parents and Caregivers
If you live in a home built before 1978 that a pregnant woman or a child
under the age of six lives in or frequently visits, you will qualify
for our free services. We receive referrals from the Health Department
for children under six that test for lead poisoning. We then contact
the families to see if they desire our services. However, a child does
not have to be lead poisoned before we can help. We also accept self
referrals.
We offer many services that protect children from lead poisoning. Our
primary service is providing FREE lead specific cleanings and minor window
repairs to decrease lead hazards in the home. At this visit, we also
educate caregivers about how to protect their families from lead poisoning
and give them appropriate cleaning supplies and instructions on how to
clean up lead dust.
Some homes may also qualify for more permanent lead removal, called abatement.
Landlords are required by law to abate a property within 90 days of being
notified of a lead poisoned child, whether or not the child continues
to live at the property. If a landlord does not comply with this requirement
they will be prosecuted and face thousands of dollars in fines. If you
are a home owner, you may qualify for grants and loans to pay for the
abatement of your home.
If you have questions about whether you qualify for our services or want
to schedule an appointment, please call our office at (313) 924-4000.
