Qualifications


CLEARCorps corpsmembers are as diverse as the communities they serve, but CLEARCorps teams are united by some common characteristics:

  A corpsmember must be at least 17 years old and a U.S. citizen

  If a corpsmember does not have a high-school diploma or equivalent, they must work to complete their GED while serving with CLEARCorps

  Corpsmembers must have a demonstrated commitment to serving their community for at least a year

  Corpsmembers must be self-starters who don't mind the hard hands-on work of cleaning, painting, and carpentry

  Corpsmembers must be willing to educate the community about childhood lead poisoning through group presentations and face-to-face education

  Corpsmembers must demonstrate a capacity to work as part of a diverse team



Terms of Service


Generally, corpsmembers serve full-time for a period of 11-12 months. Contact the local CLEARCorps program you are interested to get specific details on their service term requirements.



Benefits


All corpsmember receive a living allowance which is distributed over the course of the term of service. The AmeriCorps living allowance is not a wage, and is intended only to help defray living expenses while serving in the program. Some local CLEARCorps programs are able to provide health care and child care for qualifying corpsmembers.

Corpsmembers will also receive an educational award of $4725 upon completion of a year of service. The education award can be used to pay for college, pay back qualified student loans, and be used for the cost of some training programs.



Corpsmembers receive invaluable training which includes:

  Receiving State EPA certification and become knowledgeable about childhood lead poisoning, lead safe work practices and regulatory requirements.

  Learning the carpentry, paint stabilization and other skills necessary for lead risk reduction activities.

  Learning how to educate and motivate residents to reduce the risks of lead exposure in their homes.

  Conducting effective community outreach and education in group settings to convey lead poisoning prevention messages.

  Leading and facilitating team meetings to solve problems, make collective decisions, and reflect on team experiences.

  Developing personal educational and professional plans, and attain at least 80% of the goals projected for their term of service.
