CLEARCorps/Minnesota is operated
locally by The Sustainable Resources Center (SRC). Based in Minneapolis,
SRC is a non-profit organization working to strengthen communities
so children and families thrive. SRC focuses efforts on energy use
and environmental issues. CLEARCorps/Minnesota began in Minneapolis
and expanded to St. Paul and then rural Minnesota to respond to the
statewide concern for lead poisoning.
SRC has developed a holistic approach to housing through our weatherization
and lead programs. While Weatherization programs began addressing indoor
air quality issues such as carbon monoxide and ventilation to reduce
moisture, Lead Hazard Control programs began addressing lead dust contamination
exposures. At SRC these two protocols have become intertwined in a
working recognition of healthy housing principles that can improve
the indoor environment at the same time creating more durable, comfortable
and safe housing stock.
Through our delivery of weatherization and lead hazard control, SRC
has come to incorporate healthy housing protocols into all our activities.
Our programs offer a unique opportunity to view healthy housing protocols
at work on the ground level. We are positioned to offer the opportunity
to help improve homeowner health while lessening the burden of incurred
health related costs on the family and to enhance the value of the
home. By reclaiming the value of homes in our communities, we improve
asset retention and value to low-income homeowners. CLEARCorps/Minnesota
is a vital part of these activities.
The CLEARCorps Interactive Theater Project was also developed at CLEARCorps/Minnesota
and is now being replicated at CLEARCorps affiliates around the country,
using artistic expression as a new and exciting method for creating
community dialogue and social change. The centerpiece of this project
is Jimmy’s Getting Better, a full-length play created to raise
local awareness and spur community action to prevent childhood lead
poisoning.
