CLEARCorps Pittsburgh Is Now Recruiting New Members

June 28, 2006: Healthy Home Resources is recruiting Americorps volunteers to start their service year immediately and work as part of a team that provides a variety of services to families, caregivers, and professionals in regard to lead poisoning, asthma triggers and cleaning for a healthy home.

Team members need to be self-motivated, committed to serving the community and possess strong communication skills for easy interaction with children and adults of all educational backgrounds. Corpmembers need to be able to adapt to an evolving work environment and sympathetic to the daily demands of life faced by the families we serve. Team members will be conducting one-on-one education sessions with families, daycare staff and parents, performing a 15 minute puppet show and guiding children through an interactive festival house at community events.

Healthy Home Resources

CLEARCorps/Pittsburgh is operated by the nonprofit Healthy Home Resources. Healthy Home Resources was created to address the rise in illnesses caused or complicated by the presence of indoor environmental hazards. Founded in 1997 as PbX, a lead poisoning prevention organization, Healthy Home Resources has expanded its mission to address other critical in-home threats to human health including asthma, indoor air quality, household chemicals, child injury prevention, and take-home-from-work hazards. Healthy Home Resources is the only environmental health organization in Allegheny County, Pittsburgh that equips individuals and families with the knowledge, support, and tools needed to reduce their exposure to indoor environmental hazards.

Healthy Home Resources' Lead Safe Programs

Our lead poisoning prevention programs include community and in-home education, home assessments, and follow-ups. ClearCorps volunteers are essential ingredients to this process. Volunteers hold education sessions and perform visual assessments.

Healthy Home Resources' AT HOME program (Asthma Trigger HOMe Evaluation Program

The AT HOME program includes a set of research based in-home environmental interventions that have been designed to directly and positively influence the health of asthmatic children by lowering a myriad of in-home environmental trigger levels or hazards. The ClearCorps volunteers help educate child asthmatics and their caretakers about asthma trigger prevention. They also play an integral role in the remediation of the home.

Healthy Home Resources' Home Safe Home Program

The Home Safe Home program is a child injury prevention program that addresses the number one cause of deaths in youths under 22: preventable injuries. The program involves a checklist for potential home hazards, an education session for parents, and the distribution of various free safety devices. ClearCorps members take an active role in the execution of this program.

Local partnerships

Healthy Home Resources has partnered with many local organizations in an effort to further its mission. HHR works closely with Allegheny General Hospital, the American Respiratory Alliance, the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health, family support centers, family care centers, community centers, the Housing Authority, and various local childcare centers with the overarching goal of making Pittsburgh homes safer places. These partnerships are integral to providing Pittsburgh with a true resource for indoor environmental threats.

Healthy Home Resources also emphasizes its partnerships with families, as they are their own true agent of change.
