- Comments taken from CLEARCorps/Grand Rapids’ anonymous evaluation process
“My name is Terry Mungdon, and I live at the Chancery Place Apartments. I’ve lived here now for 16 years and went to that presentation yesterday that Georgene put on and I must say that she did a beautiful, wonderful job of presenting to us here at the Chancery Place Apartments. And she even brought food for us to eat! That’s more than any of the other people have ever done. And she’s also raffled off two mattress pads. So on behalf of everyone here at the Chancery Place Apartments, I’d like to thank you for sending her to us, and to Kate for getting a hold of her.”
“Hi Casey, this is Kate. And I have Terry in my office also. I just wanted to let you guys know that we had a really good response yesterday from you guys coming out to our building. Thanks again for coming to the Chancery apartments and we hope that you guys can come again next year.
- Comments from CLEARCorps/Seattle from a telephone conversation regarding a presentation done by corps member Georgene Chiou
“Casey Coulombe and CLEARCorps Members Cara Johnson and Georgene Chiou came out recently to my house to do a HEAL and I just wanted to get back to you; one, to express my appreciation and two, because I had your voice behind me I was able to get a lot of the toxics out of the house-paints and all sorts of different cleansers, ex cetera and we got the right kind of stuff in [green alternatives]. I don’t think I could have impressed on my roommates the need to do that without having had your assistance in terms of what you had written down. So, again I want to express my appreciation for many of the things that you suggested. We’re getting them under way here. I was delighted that the MHE program has been such a big help. Thank you so much.”
- Judy Prince regarding a CLEARCorps/Seattle staff and team home visit
I thank you SOOOO MUCH for all the time and caring information you have offered. I received both packages and am taking action. I also saw my physician as well about health concerns.
Fortunately, my landlord IS SUPPORTIVE, so is willing to pay for the clean-up etc. whew!
I really appreciate your personal disclosure about what has helped you. Now, since visiting my physician, I am thinking I don’t have chronic asthma, but more an intermittant form–Reactive Airway Disease, which she said is a little different. (Although I heard they were the same previously). Still, there is much to do to protect myself and my family!! I thank you for helping me with many critical pieces of this protection!!

What People Are Saying About “Jimmy’s Getting Better”
“Your showing of the dramatic and educational play-turned-DVD, Jimmy’s Getting Better, illustrated, once again, the importance of the work done by CLEARCorps. It is a unique educational tool that has the capability of reaching those audiences who need it most: legislators, policy makers, health care providers and community leaders. I applaud CLEARCorps’ leadership in creating and implementing innovative programs that succeed in preventing and eliminating childhood lead poisoning.”
- James E. Clyburn, Member of Congress
“I have just watched [the DVD] this evening and I’m emotionally exhausted – it’s very powerful and so worth making. The messages are clear and well incorporated into the plot and character development. You really have done a marvelous job. I was horrified when he hit out with the metal bucket but I think such strong emotion helps people to remember the message. Thank God you didn’t include visuals of the result. I really like the way it has such a strong social environmental justice basis to it and a realistic ending. The quote about having enough money to build prisons but not enough to prevent lead poisoning is very poignant. Congratulations!”
- Elizabeth O’Brien, Australia
“Wayne County Prosecutor Kym L. Worthy thinks it is very important for the public to know about the relationship between childhood lead poisoning and juvenile delinquency. We’ve long known that there is a correlation between childhood lead poisoning and behavior problems, but additional research shows that many of these children will end up in the juvenile justice system. This video will be very useful in helping other prosecutors to understand this issue better so that they can begin enforcing the new legislation that deals with childhood lead poisoning.”
- Mary DuFour Morrow, Assistant Wayne County Prosecutor
“We have been using ‘Jimmy’s Getting Better’ this year and we love it. It is a great way to get the message out to the communities we serve.” - Madeline Brown, Northern New Jersey Maternal and Child Health Consortium
“The DVD is excellent – it takes the same information we have been using in our educational presentations about lead poisoning and makes it much more immediate and dynamic. We use it all the time.”
- Cynthia Soule, Fitchburg (MA) Lead Action Group, MOC Pro Health
“I was really impressed with this DVD. Not only is it helpful for my community work in lead poisoning prevention, it’s something I found important to share with my own extended family.”
- Darnell Thomas, Chicago Department of Public Health
“The Jimmy’s Getting Better play and video has a way of connecting people with lead poisoning that other outreach interventions sometimes miss. The dramatic elements of the play and video draw people in, so that they can quickly and clearly see how they personally or professionally fit into the puzzle of addressing lead poisoning. Our community has benefited from having the video be available, with more people becoming passionate about our efforts and asking how they can participate in eliminating lead poisoning in our community.”
- Megan Ellingson, Minneapolis Department of Health and Family Support
